What You Need to Grow Baby Portabella Mushrooms To grow Portobello mushrooms at home, you’ll need a few key materials: Mushroom Spawn – The Babybella Mushroom Spawn is required to grow this type of mushroom. You can buy premade seeds online or at a garden store. Growing Medium – The best substrate for growing babybella mushrooms is a mixture of pasteurized compost and sterilized hardwood sawdust. Container – You will need a container to store your growing medium. Plastic or metal trays, or plastic bags are suitable containers for growing babybella mushrooms. Moisture source – A spray bottle is fine for this, or install a humidifier near your growing area to provide them with the necessary moisture. Temperature control – Babybella mushrooms grow best at temperatures between 65 and 75 °F (18 and 24 °C). Dark, Cool Environment – Babybella mushrooms require a dark, cool environment to mature. You can store them in a cardboard box or paper bag in a cool place or in the refrigerator. How to Grow Baby Portabella Mushrooms Step 1 – Prepare the substrate Mix pasteurized compost or a mixture of pasteurized compost and sterilized hardwood sawdust in a container. Moisten the substrate until it feels like a damp sponge. Step 2 – Add the mushroom spawn Sprinkle the babybella mushroom spawn over the substrate. Use a clean gloved hand to mix the spawn into the substrate thoroughly. Step 3 – Cover and incubate Cover the container with plastic wrap or a lid to maintain high humidity. Place the container in a warm, dark area with a temperature of 65-75°F (18-24°C) for 2-3 weeks. Check the container periodically to ensure the substrate remains moist. Make small holes or slits in the container to allow the mushrooms to grow. Keep the container in a dark and cool environment with a temperature of 65-75°F (18-24°C). Step 5 – Maintain humidity and temperature Use a spray bottle to mist the container daily to maintain high humidity levels. Use a space heater or air conditioner to maintain a consistent temperature in the growing area. Step 6 – Harvest the mushrooms Babybella mushrooms typically take 3-4 weeks to mature. When they reach the desired size, harvest them by twisting and pulling them from the substrate. Avoid using a knife to cut the mushrooms, as it can damage the substrate and increase the risk of contamination. Step 7 – Store the mushrooms Place the harvested mushrooms in a cardboard box or paper bag. Store the mushrooms in a cool room or refrigerator with a temperature of 35-45°F (2-7°C) to extend their shelf life. Use the mushrooms within a few days of harvesting for the best flavor and texture.
